Edited by Thomas Abbay, who initials the introduction to part 1 and signs that to part 2
"The proceedings of the English colonie in Virginia since their first beginning from England in the yeare of Our Lord 1606, till this present 1612, with all their accidents that befell them in their iournies and discoveries. Also the salvages discourses, orations and relations of the bordering neighbours, and how they became subiect to the English. Vnfolding even the fundamentall causes from whence haue sprang so many miseries to the vndertakers, and scandals to the businesses taken faithfully as they were written out of the writings of Thomas Studley the first provant maister, Anas Todkill, Walter Russell doctor of physicke, Nathaniell Powell, William Phettyplace, Richard Wyffin, Thomas Abbay, Tho: Hope, Rich: Potts and the labours of divers other diligent observers, that were residents in Virginia. And pervsed and confirmed by diverse now resident in England that were actors in this busines. By W.S.", p. [2-5], 3rd count, and 1-110, 4th count, has separate dated title page with imprint: At Oxford, printed by Joseph Barnes. 1612
Variant: with an additional leaf of dedication to (1) the Earl of Hereford by Smith, or (2) to T. Watson and J. Bingley by "Philip Fote" on p. [1], 5th count, (possibly a pun on the heading "To the hand" on *2r in all copies)
Folding map of Virginia, with inscription, on the scroll at the top: "Virginia", and at bottom: "Discouered and discribed by Captayn John Smith / Grauen by William Hole 1606." Figure of a savage in the upper left hand corner; in the upper right-hand corner, with inscription underneath: "Powhatan held this state & fashion when Capt. Smith was deliuered to him prisoner 1607". For the various states see the description by Wilberforce Eames in Sabin, entries 82832 and 82823
"Because many doe desire to knowe the maner of their language, I haue inserted these few words", p. [5-7], 1st count, contains a vocabulary, a list of numbers, and common phrases in the Powhatan language and English translations
